Context
背景
NYU Gaming's CS2 collegiate grand final — a five-on-five, best-of-five series backed by ZOWIE sponsorship, free for any enrolled student to enter, bringing two teams that had already fought through qualifiers and knockouts to one shared afternoon in Room 237.
Challenge
挑战
Every player would show up with their own laptop, mouse, keyboard — different builds, different drivers, different cables. There was no single point of failure to design against, only dozens of small ones, and no way to test them all in advance.
Insight
洞察
The real risk to a student tournament isn't cheating — it's the ten small ambiguities nobody wrote down until the moment someone needed an answer: who rules on a disconnect, who owns the footage, who a player calls when their headset just dies.
Idea
想法
Not a rulebook people skim once and forget, but a single briefing book that gives every role — captain, referee, technician, sponsor — a page written for the exact question they're most likely to ask mid-match.
Execution
执行
Twenty-five pages that work out match format down to the coin toss and veto order, tactical pauses timed to the second, a clear chain of command for every escalation, and a recovery procedure for the moment a PC just dies mid-round.
Outcome
结果
On the day, five different staff members — arrivals, match log, recordings, permissions, awards — each had one page telling them exactly what to check and when, and the event closed without a single ruling that had to be invented on the spot.
Reflection
